ARTIST STATEMENT

When I was painting Monster it was strange because I stood on thE lot by myself for so many hours at a time that eventually I became part of the environment. Since I was trying to paint the sky, I was getting frustrated because in looking at the sky I could mentally isolate any piece of it and it was a perfect composition. I didn’t have to angle the piece, raise it, or move it to the left or the right. Perfection exists in nature.

I began to think that the reason we’re here is to bring imperfection into the world. That is the gift of the artist. That is being a human being. Imperfection is the human element.

No artist is going to create something perfect. It’s already been done. You’re not going to beat that. It’s about the struggle. The beauty of being here is to create an imperfect sky. Imperfection is the beauty of it.
